I'm Corey, and I quote gutter and downspout jobs right across Sydney's North Shore, Willoughby included. Every time I'm out quoting in a suburb like this, I hear the same few assumptions about what can and can't be done with a roof here. Most of them aren't quite right, so I'll run through the three that come up most.
Myth
Myth: a protected tree means your gutters are stuck full forever
Fact
Fact: Willoughby City Council requires a permit before you touch a lot of the trees that make this suburb what it is: anything over 4 metres tall with a trunk girth over 600mm, a crown spread over 3 metres, a locally native species, or a tree in a wildlife corridor. You can prune up to 10% of a crown yourself every five years, but that's about it without an application and a council arborist signing off. That doesn't mean the leaf litter is just something you live with. I'm not there to touch the tree, council rules or not — I'm there to clear what it's already dropped, on a set schedule rather than waiting until water's coming over the fascia.
Myth
Myth: Willoughby's bushfire territory, so your gutters need the full ember-guard treatment
Fact
Fact: Willoughby City Council does manage bushfire risk across the LGA, with over 300 hectares of bushland and part of that mapped as bush fire prone land. But the hazard reduction work council runs is concentrated in the escarpment pockets: Castle Cove, Castlecrag, Northbridge and Naremburn. Willoughby itself is the older, built-up part of the LGA, close to the Chatswood town centre, with Flat Rock Gully running along one edge rather than through the middle of it. Yes, I do treat those properties differently when it comes to gutter guard. Flat Rock Gully is a dense, continuous stretch of native bushland, so places bordering it face a genuinely higher ember-attack and bushfire risk, plus heavier native tree debris, than most of the suburb sees. A standard, off-the-shelf gutter guard isn't really up to that job, it can fail or end up creating a hazard rather than preventing one, so I recommend a heavier-duty option suited to a high bushfire-risk property instead.
Myth
Myth: a gutter quote is a gutter quote, whatever kind of place you've got
Fact
Fact: Willoughby's housing isn't one type of place. Census data shows 56.5% separate houses, 10.6% semis, terraces and townhouses, and 31.7% flats or apartments, with an average of 2.9 bedrooms per dwelling — a lot of older two-storey homes from the suburb's federation and interwar eras sitting alongside blocks of units, often on the same street.
