The canopy over Killara's roofs
Killara's own council mapping puts tree canopy cover at 36.7% of the suburb, actually on the low side for Ku-ring-gai (only Roseville sits lower; the LGA average is above 51%). That still means well over a third of Killara sits under tree cover, and on streets with mature Federation-era plantings that cover sits directly over a lot of roofs. For your gutters, that's a steady trickle of leaf litter rather than one big autumn dump, so the gutters that catch people out here are usually the ones nobody's checked since last summer.

Ku-ring-gai's rules on your own trees
Ku-ring-gai Council runs a permit system for work on trees on private land: a "tree" is anything with a self-supporting stem at least 5 metres tall or a trunk 150mm or more in diameter, and an application has to go in before you prune or remove one. If a branch is hanging low over your roofline, you can't just get someone to lop it off the day you notice the gutter's blocked — that's a separate council process. Clearing the gutter itself doesn't touch the tree at all, so it's worth booking on its own timeline rather than waiting on a pruning approval to come through first.

The golf course corridor and the older housing stock
A good stretch of the middle of Killara runs along open parkland and a golf course, and a fair few blocks back directly onto it. Most of the housing around here is Federation or Californian Bungalow era, with plenty of two-storey homes mixed through. Older two-storey homes next to a treed course usually mean steeper roof pitches, taller ladder runs, and gutters that were never designed with today's downpipe sizes in mind.

Houses, not just units
At the last census, 54.7% of Killara's occupied dwellings were separate houses and 42.6% were flats or apartments, with an average of 3.3 bedrooms per dwelling for houses. Gutter cleaning is a house job, not a strata one, and on a typical 3 to 4 bedroom roof that's usually two storeys' worth of gutter length to get through properly. In my experience, most of the roofs I'm working on in Killara are tile rather than Colorbond, which changes where the muck collects and how I move around up there.
