Half houses, half apartments
At the last Census, 45% of Gordon's homes were separate houses and 48% were apartments. The houses are big ones: a third of all homes here have four or more bedrooms, which on a house means long gutter runs and plenty of downpipes. I also clean gutters on townhouses and unit blocks up to three storeys.
What I look for on an older roof
Getting the leaves out is the easy part. On an older house I'm also looking for rust, for sections that have started to sag, and for brackets that have worked loose, and I'll tell you what I find. Then I clear the downpipes, because a clean gutter over a blocked downpipe still overflows. Old roofs often have moss and small plants growing in the gutters too, and those come out with everything else.
If your block backs onto the bush
The NSW Rural Fire Service lists cleaning leaves and twigs out of your gutters among the steps for preparing a home for bush fire. If you're near the creek or one of the reserves, get them cleared before summer and don't wait for the first hot, windy week.
The trees themselves
Ku-ring-gai Council protects any tree 5 metres or taller, or with a trunk 150 mm or more across at the ground. Cutting one back generally needs a council permit, and that's work for an arborist. I clean up what the trees drop. If a branch is resting on your roof or filling one corner of the gutter faster than the rest, I'll show you in the photos I take.
